GOAL AND PURPOSE

Saint Helen Catholic School promotes healthy schools by supporting wellness, good nutrition, and regular physical activity as part of the learning environment. Saint Helen Catholic School supports a healthy environment where children learn and participate in positive dietary and lifestyle practices. The school contributes to the basic health status of children by facilitating learning through the support of good nutrition and physical activity; by partnering with Holy Cross Hospital, schools, parish, parents, and families, the practice of good nutrition and physical activity may be achieved.

PREAMBLE

St. Helen Catholic School recognizes that good nutrition and regular physical activity affect the health and well-being of all students. Furthermore, research suggests that there is a positive correlation between a student’s health and well-being and his/her ability to learn. Children need access to healthy foods and physical activity to grow, learn, and be successful academically; good health fosters student’s attendance and education. Schools can play an important role in the developmental process by which students establish their health and nutrition habits by providing nutritious meals and snacks through the schools’ meal programs, supporting the development of good eating habits and promoting increased physical activity both in and out of school.

St. Helen Catholic School is committed to creating school environments that promote and protect the overall well-being of all students and staff. St. Helen and the Archdiocese of Miami are committed in supporting a school environment the protect the children’s health, wellbeing, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. It is St. Helen Catholic School policy to ensure that the following elementary and middle school follow the listed recommendations.

Nutrition Education

  1. Saint Helen School programs offer students in pre-kindergarten through grade 8 nutrition education that provides the knowledge the students need to adopt healthy   
  2. Saint Helen Catholic School has implemented nutrition education in all their Physical Education Curriculum in all grade levels. Proper nutrition is discussed in Science classes as well.
  3. Saint Helen Catholic School Physical Education teacher is adequately trained and has his/her Physical Education Certification which allows him/her to implement a variety of games and nutrition information into the curriculum to help promote a healthy lifestyle to all grade levels within the school.
  4. The Saint Helen Catholic School’s teachers have access to appropriate professional and classroom resources to provide all students proper nutrition education which promotes some healthy lifestyles for all students. One way that this is accomplished is through a close relationship with Holy Cross Hospital teaching resources and facilitators.
  5. The school lunch program serves as a learning laboratory to teach and practice good nutrition.
  6. Saint Helen Catholic School provides proper nutrition education and encourages healthy eating for families. Saint Helen Catholic School has specifically designed curriculum to engage family members to work with students and help teach children about living a healthy lifestyle outside of the classroom environment. Saint Helen Catholic School provides every student, as well as their family’s proper nutrition information and ways to implement a healthy lifestyle not only at school but at home. In Science class, students will create project on healthy meal plans and help educate others on how to eat a balanced and healthy diet.

EVALUATION

  • Review of menus, production records and nutrient analysis.
  • Incorporate Nutrition Education within the Physical Education and Science Lesson Plans.
  • Students design healthy meal plans as shown in their Science projects.

School level

Saint Helen will establish an ongoing Healthy School Team that will meet twice per year in September and February to ensure compliance and to facilitate the implementation of St. Helen Catholic School wellness policy.

  • The school principal and local school staff shall have the responsibility to comply with federal and state regulations as they relate to Helen Catholic School wellness policy.
  • In each school, the Free and Reduced Lunch coordinator will be responsible for establishing the Healthy School Team that will ensure compliance with the policy.
  • The Healthy School Team should include, but not be limited to, the following stakeholders: parents, students, school food service program representatives, school administrators, school health professionals, physical education teachers and the public.
  • The Healthy School Team is responsible for:
    • Ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations for competitive food and beverage items sold on the school campus (7 CFR 210.11 and FAC 5P-1.003);
    • Maintaining a school calendar identifying the dates when exempted competitive food fundraisers will occur in accordance with the frequency specified in paragraph (c) of FAC 5P-1.003;
    • And reporting its school’s compliance of the regulations to the Free and Reduced Lunch coordinator, the person responsible for ensuring overall compliance with St. Helen Catholic School wellness policy.

St. Helen Catholic School will review and consider evidence-based strategies and techniques in establishing goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity and other school based activities that promote student wellness to include, at a minimum, a review of Smarter Lunchroom tools and techniques.

  1. Nutrition Promotion

Nutrition promotion can positively influence lifelong eating behaviors by creating food environments that encourage healthy choices and encourage participation in the school meal programs.

  • The school environment, including the cafeteria and classroom, shall provide clear and consistent messages that promote and reinforce healthy eating.
  • Students will have access to useful nutrition information. Posters, worksheets and brochures will be available in classrooms and throughout each school’s campus.
  • Schools will provide parents with healthy snack ideas, and opportunities for physical after school.
  1. Nutrition Education

Academic performance and quality of life issues are affected by the choice and availability of nutritious foods in our schools. Healthy foods support student physical growth, brain development, resistance to disease, emotional stability and ability to learn.

  • The nutrition benchmarks included in Florida’s Physical Education Standards shall be taught as part of the structured and systematic unit of instruction during physical education classes and will be integrated into other subject area of science where there is a natural fit.
  • Students receive nutrition education that is interactive and teaches skills they need to adopt healthy eating behaviors. Classroom lectures, activities and student participation are provided in nutrition and health classes. Classroom written tests (such as multiple choice and fill in the blank) are given in the areas of nutrition provided by various links attached in the weekly Thursday Updates.
  • Students will understand how food reaches the table and the implications that has for their health and future. Staff shall integrate hands-on experiences such as working in a garden, and enrichment activities such as farmer’s market field trips and visits to community gardens with the core curriculum. Students will receive homework supporting these activities to ensure comprehension. Staff training where cooking activities, and instructions are offered.
  • Nutrition education will be incorporated within the larger school community. The nutrition education program shall work with the school meal program to develop school gardens and use the cafeteria as a learning lab. Students will harvest vegetables from the school garden and work with the cafeteria staff to create wholesome snacks.  
  • Nutrition education will teach skills that are behavior-focused. Students will be taught about calorie balance, energy expenditure and how to read and interpret nutrition facts labels.
  • The School Nurse and License Nutritionist are both employees of Holy Cross Hospital and continually provides in the classroom teaching on the importance and benefits of healthy eating from a young.
  1. Physical Activity

St. Helen Catholic shall ensure that physical activity is an essential element of each school’s instructional program. The program shall provide the opportunity for all students to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to participate in a lifetime of physical activity.

  • All students in grades K-5 shall receive 150 minutes per week of instructionally relevant health wellness and physical education. For middle school, physical education in grades 6-8, all students shall receive a minimum of one class of in each week via the physical education course offered by Helen Catholic School with the approved state course codes. (Sunshine State Standards)
  • All elementary school students will have at least 35 minutes of daily recess. Each school will provide space, equipment and an environment conducive to safe and enjoyable play.
  • Students will have the opportunity to be involved in physical activity through physical education programs, after school activities or other activity programs. Students will be encouraged to participate in community-offered fitness and athletic programs.
  • Staff will be encouraged to participate in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (e.g., brisk walking, every week. Staff will be informed of the opportunity to participate in physical activity in afterschool programs and community events.
  • Regular classroom teachers will be encouraged to provide short physical activity breaks between lessons or classes, as appropriate.
  1. Other School-Based Activities

St. Helen Catholic School will integrate wellness activities across the entire school setting. The school has Athletic Banquet and Award Ceremony for participation in various athletic activities Basketball, Flag football, Volleyball, and Cheerleading. Dance classes and The Gardening Club are some other school activities that initiates good nutrition, physical activities and other wellness components so that all efforts work towards the same set of goals and objectives used to promote student well-being, optimal development and strong educational outcomes.

  1. Saint Helen Catholic School works to provide the opportunity for every student to receive regular, age-appropriate, equality physical education.
  1. Saint Helen Catholic School strives to instill these healthy habits through the Gardening Program in which students cultivate their own vegetable garden.
  2. Helen Catholic School recommends that students participate in physical activity during and after school in accordance with the national recommended guidelines.
  1. All physical education classes shall be taught by certified physical education teachers and designed to build interest and proficiency in skills, knowledge, and attitudes essential to a lifelong, physical active lifestyle.
  1. Physical education will should provide safe and satisfying physical activity for all students.
  1. The Elementary school will provide at least 20 minutes of daily recess or physical activities on days that they do not have physical education.
  1. The School shall not use participation or non-participation in physical education class or recess to punish or discipline students.
  1. After-school programs shall include supervised, age-appropriate physical activates that appeal to a variety of interest.
  1. School shall disseminate information for parents to help then promote and incorporate physical activity and healthy eating into their children’s lives.

Additional School Goals:

  1. All Food and Nutrition Services personnel have adequate pre-training and participate in on-going professional development in the areas of sanitation, school food service essentials, nutrition and quantity cooking.
  1. Schools will provide menus that meets the requirements of the USDA for school meals, and over the course of a week meet the nutritional standards recommended by the Recommended Dietary Allowances of equivalent.
  1. Effective food safety practices are applied to all foods prepared, sold and served through the Food and Nutrition Services of the school.
  1. The school shall participate in the Farm to Table program fresh fruits and snacks will be available daily.
  1. Meals are scheduled as close as possible to the middle of the day. Dining areas should maintain hygienic standards, appear cheerful, and appropriately supervised.
  1. Families are encouraged to be involved and address food and nutrition issues. The Home and School Board meets periodically and designee of the Wellness Policy provides information on the School Nutrition Program. Parents are encouraged to offer input at these meetings.

Eating Environment

  • Students will be provided an adequate amount of time to consume their meal with a minimum of 20 minutes after receiving their food from the line.
  • Each school will provide nutritious, fresh, locally grown food that reflects Florida’s bountiful harvest.
  • Convenient access to facilities for hand washing and oral hygiene will be available during meal periods.

Healthier US School Challenge

  • All schools will be encouraged to join the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Team Nutrition program and apply to be recognized as a Healthier US School and Smarter Lunchrooms School.

Recycling

  • Each school shall maximize the reduction of waste by recycling, reusing, composting and purchasing recycled products.

Employee Wellness

  • All staff will be provided with opportunities to participate in physical activities and healthy eating programs that are accessible and free or low-cost.

Health Services

  • A coordinated program of accessible health services shall be provided to students and staff and shall include, but not be limited to, violence prevention, school safety, health screening, immunizations, first aid/CPR training.

Behavior Management

  • Helen Catholic School is committed to prohibiting the use of food as a reward, unless incorporated into an activity that promotes positive nutrition messages (such as a guest chef or field trip to a farm).
  • Teachers and other school personnel will not deny or require physical activity as a means of punishment.
  1. Guidelines for All Foods and Beverages Available During the School Day

St. Helen Catholic School shall operate and provide food service in accordance with USDA’s National School Lunch Program (NSLP) standards and applicable laws and regulations of the state of Florida. The guidelines for reimbursable school meals shall not be less restrictive than regulations and guidance issued by USDA.

General Guidelines

  • All reimbursable meals will meet nutrition standards mandated by USDA, as well as any additional state nutrition standards that go beyond USDA requirements.
  • School meals will include a variety of nutrient-dense foods, including whole grains and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, while accommodating special dietary needs and ethnic and cultural food preferences.
  • To the maximum extent possible, all schools in Helen Catholic School will participate in available federal school meal programs, including the SBP, NSLP, ASSP, AMP, and SFSP.
  • Free, potable water will be made available to all children during each meal service.

Competitive Foods

  • All foods and beverages sold on the school campus to students outside of reimbursable school meals are considered “competitive foods,” and must comply with the nutrition standards for competitive food as defined and required in 7 CFR 210.11.
    • School campus means, for competitive food standards implementation, all areas of the property under the jurisdiction of the school that are accessible to students during the school day.
    • School day means, for competitive food standards implementation, the period from the midnight before, to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day.
  • Competitive foods include items sold a la carte in the cafeteria, from vending machines, school stores, snack bars and for in-school fundraisers.
  • Unless being sold by Helen Catholic School food service program, it is impermissible for any competitive food item sold to students during the school day to consist of ready-to-eat combination foods of meat or meat alternate and grain products, as defined in 7 CFR 210.10 and 210.11. (FAC 5P-1.003)
  • To be allowable, all competitive food items sold to students must meet general nutrition requirements and nutrient standards.

General nutrition requirements for competitive foods:

  • Be a grain product that contains 50 percent or more whole grains by weight or have a whole grain as the first ingredient.
  • Have as the first ingredient one of the non-grain major food groups: fruits, vegetables, dairy or protein foods (meat, beans, poultry, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, etc.).
  • Be a combination food that contains 1⁄4 cup of fruit and/or vegetable.
  • If water is the first ingredient, the second ingredient must be one of the above.

  • Reduced fat cheese, nuts, seeds and nut/seed butters, as well as seafood and whole eggs with no added fat are exempt from the total fat and saturated fat standards.

Fundraising

  • Fundraising efforts will be supportive of healthy eating by complying with all applicable regulations and nutrition standards for competitive foods while also emphasizing the sale of nonfood items.
  • No fundraisers that include the sale of food items will occur until thirty (30) minutes after the conclusion of the last designated meal service period.
  • The school board is permitted to grant a special exemption from the standards for competitive foods as specified above for conducting infrequent school-sponsored fundraisers, not to exceed the following maximum number of school days per school campus each school year:

  1. Policy for Food and Beverage Marketing

School-based marketing will be consistent with policies for nutrition education and health promotion. As such, the following guidelines apply:

  • Schools will only be allowed to market and advertise those foods and beverages that meet or exceed USDA’s Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards.
  • Helen Catholic School nutrition department’s replacement and purchasing decisions will reflect the marketing guidelines mentioned above.
  1. Evaluation and Measurement of the Implementation of the Wellness Policy

St. Helen Catholic School wellness committee will update and make modifications to the wellness policy based on the results of the annual review and triennial assessments and/or as local priorities change, community needs change, wellness goals are met, new health information and technology emerges and new federal or state guidance or standards are issued. The wellness policy will be assessed as indicated at least every three years following the triennial assessment.

Triennial Progress Assessments

St. Helen Catholic School will assess the local school wellness policy to measure wellness policy compliance at least once every three years. This assessment will measure the implementation of the local school wellness policy, and include:

  • The extent to which Helen Catholic School is following the local school wellness policy.
  • The extent to which the local school wellness policy compares to model local school wellness policies.
  • A description of the progress made in attaining the goals of the local school wellness policy.
  1. Informing the Public

St. Helen Catholic School will ensure that the wellness policy and most recent triennial assessment are available to the public always. St. Helen Catholic School will also actively notify households on an annual basis about any updates made to the wellness policy and the availability of the triennial assessment results, as well as provide information to the community about the school nutrition environment.

  • Helen Catholic School will present wellness policy updates, as applicable, during meetings with the Parent Teacher Association/Organization, school board, district superintendent, health and wellness committee.
  • Wellness updates will be provided to students, parents and staff, as applicable, in the form of handouts.
  1. Community Involvement

St. Helen Catholic School is committed to being responsive to community input, which begins with awareness of the wellness policy. St. Helen Catholic School will actively communicate ways in which parents, students, representatives of the school food authority, teachers of physical education, school health professionals, the school board, school administrators and the public can participate in the development, implementation and annual review of the local school wellness policy through a variety of means, including:

  • Helen Catholic School will consider student needs in planning for a healthy nutrition environment. Students will be asked for input and feedback by suggestion box and attention will be given to their comments.
  • Helen Catholic School will use non-electronic mechanisms, such as newsletters, and send handouts to parents or sending information home to parents.

Record Keeping

Records to document compliance with the requirements of the local school wellness policy will include, but is not limited to the following:

  • The written local school wellness policy;
  • Documentation demonstrating compliance with community involvement requirements, including requirements to make the local school wellness policy and triennial assessments available to the public as consistent with the section on informing and updating the public; and
  • Documentation of the triennial assessment of the local school wellness policy.

Standards of Ethical Conduct
Saint Helen Catholic School

1. Our school values the worth and dignity of every person, the pursuit of truth, devotion to excellence, acquisition of knowledge, and the nurture of democratic citizenship. Essential to the achievement of these standards are the freedom to learn and to teach and the guarantee of equal opportunity for all.

2. Our primary concern is the student and the development of the student's potential. Employees will therefore strive for professional growth and will seek to exercise the best professional judgment and integrity.

3. Concern for the student requires that our instructional personnel:

          a. Shall make reasonable effort to protect the student from conditions harmful to learning and/or to the student's mental and/or physical health and/or safety.

          b. Shall not unreasonably restrain a student from independent action in pursuit of learning.

          c. Shall not unreasonably deny a student access to diverse points of view.

          d. Shall not intentionally suppress or distort subject matter relevant to a student's academic program.

          e. Shall not intentionally expose a student to unnecessary embarrassment or disparagement.

          f. Shall not intentionally violate or deny a student's legal rights.

          g. Shall not harass or discriminate against any student on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, national or ethnic origin, political beliefs, marital status, handicapping condition, sexual orientation, or social and family background and shall make reasonable effort to assure that each student is protected from harassment or discrimination.

          h. Shall not exploit a relationship with a student for personal gain or advantage.

          i. Shall keep in confidence personally identifiable information obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure serves professional purposes or is required by law.

4. Aware of the importance of maintaining the respect and confidence of colleagues, of students, of parents, and of the community, employees of our school must display the highest degree of ethical conduct. This commitment requires that our employees:

          a. Shall maintain honesty in all professional dealings.

          b. Shall not on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, national or ethnic origin, political beliefs, marital status, handicapping condition if otherwise qualified, or social and family background deny to a colleague professional benefits or advantages or participation in any professional organization.

          c. Shall not interfere with a colleague's exercise of political or civil rights and responsibilities.

          d. Shall not engage in harassment or discriminatory conduct which unreasonably interferes with an individual's performance of professional or work responsibilities or with the orderly processes of education or which creates a hostile, intimidating, abusive, offensive, or oppressive environment; and, further, shall make reasonable effort to assure that each individual is protected from such harassment or discrimination.

          e. Shall not make malicious or intentionally false statements about a colleague.

All instructional personnel and administrators are required as a condition of employment to complete training on these standards of ethical conduct.

Reporting Misconduct by Instructional Personnel and Administrators:

All employees and administrators have an obligation to report misconduct by instructional personnel and school administrators which affects the health, safety, or welfare of a student. Examples of misconduct include obscene language, drug and alcohol use, disparaging comments, prejudice or bigotry, sexual innuendo, cheating or testing violations, physical aggression, and accepting or offering favors. Legally sufficient allegations of misconduct by Florida certified educators will be reported to the Office of Professional Practices Services. Policies and procedures for reporting misconduct by instructional personnel or school administrators which affects the health, safety, or welfare of a student are posted in School Office, Cafeteria and Teacher’s lounge and on our Web site at www.sainthelen.net.

Reporting Child Abuse, Abandonment or Neglect: All employees and agents have an affirmative duty to report all actual or suspected cases of child abuse, abandonment, or neglect. Call 1-800-96-ABUSE or report online at: http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/abuse/report/.

Signs of Physical Abuse: The child may have unexplained bruises, welts, cuts, or other injuries; broken bones; or burns. A child experiencing physical abuse may seem withdrawn or depressed, seem afraid to go home or may run away, shy away from physical contact, be aggressive, or wear inappropriate clothing to hide injuries.

Signs of Sexual Abuse: The child may have torn, stained or bloody underwear, trouble walking or sitting, pain or itching in genital area, or a sexually transmitted disease. A child experiencing sexual abuse may have unusual knowledge of sex or act seductively, fear a particular person, seem withdrawn or depressed, gain or lose weight suddenly, shy away from physical contact, or run away from home.

Signs of Neglect: The child may have unattended medical needs, little or no supervision at home, poor hygiene, or appear underweight. A child experiencing neglect may be frequently tired or hungry, steal food, or appear overly needy for adult attention.

Patterns of Abuse: Serious abuse usually involves a combination of factors. While a single sign may not be significant, a pattern of physical or behavioral signs is a serious indicator and should be reported.

Liability Protections: Any person, official, or institution participating in good faith in any act authorized or required by law or reporting in good faith any instance of child abuse, abandonment, or neglect to the department or any law enforcement agency, shall be immune from any civil or criminal liability which might otherwise result by reason of such action. (F.S. 39.203)

An employer who discloses information about a former or current employee to a prospective employer of the former or current employee upon request of the prospective employer or of the former or current employee is immune from civil liability for such disclosure or its consequences unless it is shown by clear and convincing evidence that the information disclosed by the former or current employer was knowingly false or violated any civil right of the former or current employee protected under F.S. Chapter 760. (F.S. 768.095)
